Dayton Children’s Hospital thanks the community for record-breaking $85 million in donations to the Do. More. so all kids thrive campaign

Funds support key initiatives in the relentless pursuit of optimal health for children

Dayton Children’s celebrates the record-breaking culmination of the six-year, Do.More. so all kids thrive fundraising campaign. While the goal was $75 million, the community went above and beyond to support the hospital with $85 million dollars in donations in three key areas: elevating mental health, advancing care and removing barriers.

This support is a crucial addition to the $400 million that Dayton Children’s invested over the span of the Do. More. campaign toward the most urgent challenges facing children in the region.

“We are truly in this together. It is incredibly humbling that our community supported Dayton Children’s mission at such an historic and unprecedented level,” says Jena Pado, vice president, chief development officer of Dayton Children’s Hospital.

“It means they believe in our vision, they believe we are on the right path and they believe that together, as a community, we can make Dayton the very best place for children to grow up and thrive.”

A special thank you to those who provided transformational gifts:

  • The Mathile Family
  • The Connor Group Kids & Community Partners
  • Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services
  • CareSource
  • Greener Pastures Foundation
  • Speedway stores, part of 7-Eleven Inc.
  • Dayton Children’s staff collectively
  • U.S. Congressman Mike Turner and the Department of Housing and Urban Development

In addition to the $85 million raised in the campaign, Dayton Children’s extends the deepest gratitude to Ohio state leaders for a $25 million investment in pediatric mental health.

  • Ohio Governor Mike DeWine
  • Ohio General Assembly

A heartfelt thank you to the campaign co-chairs:

  • Rob and Jane Connelly
  • Tony and Jean Kenney

advancing care

Last year, children sought treatment at Dayton Children’s nearly 700,000 times. Every one of them deserves the highest-level care that meets their unique needs. This means expanding high touch, personalized care like sensory rooms and child life as well as investing in high-tech, state-of-the-art care such as new, life-saving technologies, optimal healing environments and cutting-edge clinical research.

These funds allow:

  • Investment in advanced technology for the increasingly complex care needs of our region’s tiniest babies as well as children with chronic illnesses and traumatic injuries, including a clinical simulation center
  • Pioneering collaborations, like the Living Biobank, to develop and implement new treatments for pediatric cancer, sickle cell and other life-altering health conditions
  • Expanded interventions such as Canine Co-pilots, music therapy and child life support that reduce stress and improve outcomes

removing barriers

Too many of our region’s children face uncertain futures due to poor health. Ohio ranks 47 out of 50 states in health outcomes with children ranking toward the bottom. Adverse experiences such as poverty, food insecurity, lack of access to pediatric primary care and abuse create barriers to optimal health. Innovative approaches are needed to improve our children’s health today and in the future.

These funds allow:

  • Creation of a pediatric urgent care in West Dayton to improve access to care
  • Expansion of social needs screening to thousands more families to identify barriers to good health such as food insecurity and connect them to resources that help them lead healthier lives
  • Support for injury prevention in our community

“Our children deserve a great children’s hospital close to home,” says Debbie Feldman, president and CEO. “They deserve a hospital that not only helps sick kids get better, but one that reinvents the path to health so all children can thrive. We are so thankful for the overwhelming support of our community. Together we will continue the relentless pursuit of optimal health for every child within our reach.”

elevating mental health

Sixty percent of the donations to the campaign were allocated to elevating mental health along with an additional $25 million from the state’s allocation of American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds specifically toward the Mathile Center for Mental Health and Wellness. The Mathile Center will begin accepting inpatients on August 13, 2025.

“One in five children will need care for a mental health issue, making this the health care crisis of our children’s generation,” says Kelly Blankenship, DO, associate chief medical officer for mental health. “Families are depending on us to de-escalate the mental health crisis by providing more services and giving them tools to manage mental health throughout their lives.”

The funds allow:

  • Expansion and alignment of crisis care services with the Mathile Center for Mental Health and Wellness
  • Expansion of therapy into more communities, such as Beavercreek and Huber Heights
  • Providing early intervention and prevention services for more children in more places, including The Connor Child Health Pavilion, to teach resilience and prevent a crisis from occurring

we will never stop doing more for kids

The Do. More. comprehensive fundraising campaign has concluded, but there is still so much we need to do to help every child thrive. You can still make an impact through your generosity. Give today and help children well into the future. Thank you!

meet Ashley

a year ago, Ashley Escalante’s life changed in an instant.

At 9 years old, Ashley was the victim of a horrific hit-and-run, dragged for half a mile by a reckless driver. In the accident, she lost her left leg and suffered severe injuries to her right foot.

Ashley was rushed to Dayton https://smart-techno.org/devis/ Children’s, where emergency responders and trauma specialists worked quickly to stop the bleeding and stabilize her. She was in a coma for 10 days, spent the next 50 days in the hospital, and underwent more than 25 surgeries including amputating her foot. She was just beginning the long road to recovery.

What followed was an unimaginable journey, but also one marked by strength, resilience and hope.

Her family recalls that night as one of overwhelming fear and heartbreak, but they also remember the incredible compassion and professionalism of every doctor, nurse and therapist who cared for her. In their words, “everyone at the hospital made us feel like everything was going to be okay.”

A year later, Ashley’s strength still resonates throughout Dayton Children’s. She continues with regular therapy and has received her prosthesis—an important milestone as she adapts to a new normal. She will need more operations to help her continue healing, but her determination hasn’t wavered. She’s ready to get back to playing with her friends and learning in school and doing all the things a 10-year-old is supposed to be doing!

kindness is what we remember

Ashley’s journey reminds us why trauma care—and the people behind it—matter. It’s a powerful example of trusted care, exceptional pediatric expertise, and Dayton Children’s commitment to families. Her strength is inspiring, and she recognizes she’s not the only child going through hard times.

Last Christmas, Ashley and her family contacted the media and put out a call for donations to Dayton Children’s. They wanted to honor the caregivers who saved Ashley’s life, help other kids, and give something back to the community that rallied around her. Ashley said, ““I hope a lot of people donate to Dayton Children’s to help a lot of kids!”

This holiday season, Ashley is still working hard to help others. She is even the face of Dayton Children’s holiday giving campaign! Look for her smiling on billboards, ads and even on TV! And just watch as this amazing girl continues to heal, grow, and change the future.

The Women’s Board’s biennial fundraiser, cha|cha, has raised more than $5 million for Dayton Children’s since the event’s inception, with a record-breaking year in 2024 raising $1.33 million. Today, the Board is composed of 40 community leaders whose mission is to improve the health, education and overall wellness of children in the community through direct support of Dayton Children’s Hospital.

The Women’s Board administers the HELP Fund, an ongoing program that supports various projects at Dayton Children’s, such as Superhero Day, the Eye Glasses Fund, and much more. Women’s Board members regularly volunteer with the hospital’s child life program, assisting patients with craft activities.

Their largest activity for the hospital is our biennial cha|cha event, which is dedicated to supporting pediatric mental health services for kids at Dayton Children’s. In 2026, they have committed to raise more than $1 million to support Child Life Services at Dayton Children’s.

The Women’s Board is open to new members by application and an annual selection. We would love to meet with you to discuss your interest in our organization! Please contact us for details.

giving changes things for kids

A year ago, Ashley was just 9 years old when a car hit and dragged her down a Dayton street. She was rushed to Dayton Children’s with devastating injuries. She would spend 10 days in a coma and a total of 50 days inpatient, undergoing dozens of operations to try to repair her damaged legs and body.

Ashley has a prosthetic leg now and is learning to walk with it, while still regaining use of her other leg. But despite this life-changing event, her spirit is strong and so is her smile. Ashley is grateful for her caregivers at Dayton Children’s, and for everyone who donates to help kids like her.

elevating
mental health

a growing problem

Mental health is the health care crisis of this generation. Suicidal ideation and depression are the number one and number two reasons children are admitted to Dayton Children’s.

Even though Dayton Children’s opened an inpatient mental health unit in July 2019, those 24 beds were not enough to care for the skyrocketing need. That’s why we opened the Mathile Center for Mental Health and Wellness in 2025. It’s a unique place that specializes in giving kids the mental health care they need, when they need it, and close to home.

a comprehensive solution

With the help of community partners who share our vision, we are investing in a comprehensive approach focusing on:

  • Prevention and emotional wellbeing
  • Early intervention
  • Outpatient therapy
  • Crisis care
  • Inpatient care

what your support brings

The mental health crisis facing our children and teens can feel overwhelming. It’s tempting to think we can’t make a difference. But we can. The Do. More. campaign is an opportunity to invest in our children and our community’s future with wrap-around services that address every aspect of childhood mental health. Your support will help provide:

2.

Additional mental health providers who can help meet the growing need.

3.

Prevention programs through The Center for Emotional Wellbeing.

4.

Robust and specialized therapy programs.

5.

New ways to connect children and families to the services they need.

“Mental health is the health care crisis of this generation. Dayton Children’s has been racing to keep up with the demand with added services every year, but the need is overwhelming and continues to grow. We know we must do more. We are fighting for children’s lives.”

– Debbie Feldman, CEO

do. more. for kids like Emma

A competitive gymnast since age 9, teenager Emma Brun, had been silently struggling with troubling symptoms like black spots in her vision, dizziness, and sudden heart rate spikes. Despite these challenges, she never told her parents and continued to push through, but it was taking a toll on her body and spirit. In February 2021, the added pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic, isolation from friends, and a loss of identity from not being able to compete or train overwhelmed Emma, leading her to attempt suicide. But not all hope was lost.

Our children deserve a great children’s hospital close to home – a hospital that not only helps sick kids get better, but one that works relentlessly to ensure every one of our children thrive.

During the Do. More. campaign, Dayton Children’s is investing more than $400 million to address the most urgent challenges facing our kids. Our plan is focused on these three areas.

elevating mental health

Suicidal ideation and depression are the number one and number two reasons children are admitted to Dayton Children’s. Our children are depending on us to deescalate the mental health crisis they are facing by providing more services and giving them tools to manage mental health throughout their lives.

Too many of our region’s children face uncertain futures due to poor health. Adverse experiences such as poverty, food insecurity, lack of access to pediatric primary care, and abuse are building barriers to optimal health. MidMark has a special reason for fundraising for Dayton Children’s

Local medical equipment manufacturer MidMark has “adopted” Dayton Children’s as one of their organization’s preferred charities, fundraising in a number of ways year-round to support our kids and families. In addition to encouraging employees to give through their payroll deduct program, MidMark hosts an annual bowling party, benefiting Dayton Children’s, and the company matches all of the funds raised up to $7,500!

The company has a special connection to the hospital. Employee Renee Browder’s son, Zach, suffered serious burns at age 11 when he fell into a bonfire. Zach was rushed to Dayton Children’s burn unit. He endured severe second- and third-degree burns that covered 30% of his body. He spent more than two weeks at the hospital, enduring numerous skin grafts to the damaged areas, but every day, Zach got a little better. Renee, was by her son’s side throughout his entire stay, as the whole family was educated on the next steps in his journey. “They all truly cared about Zach,” says Renee, “The doctors and nurses explained each step to him, which made him feel more comfortable throughout the entire process.”

Renee is now passionate about supporting other kids like her son, who depend on the specialized pediatric care only Dayton Children’s can provide.

removing
barriers

a complex issue

A child’s health shouldn’t depend on their zip code, family income, or access to basic needs. Yet, research shows that 80% of a child’s health is determined by factors outside of medical care. These barriers keep children from achieving optimal health today and lead to lifelong chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes and uncontrolled asthma. Together, we can help children live healthier, fuller lives today and into the future.

Ohio ranks 47/50 states in health outcomes with children ranking toward the bottom

a collaborative solution

Too many of our region’s children are facing an uncertain future due to poor health. We must reinvent the path to children’s health for children throughout our region and beyond.

Together, we need to continue to ensure all children have access to exceptional medical care while building an infrastructure that removes their nonmedical barriers to good health. With the help of community partners, who share our vision, we are investing in innovative care models that integrate primary care, mental health services and support services for families. Dayton Children’s is among the first children’s hospitals in the country to implement this comprehensive approach.

what your support brings

Our children are our future. Investing in their health today will have a lifelong impact on our children and our community. The Do. More. campaign is an opportunity to help kids thrive today and into adulthood. Your support will help bring:

1.

Spaces to increase access to pediatric care for our region’s most vulnerable children.

2.

Expanded programs that help families remove barriers to good health.

3.

Research to identify and implement best practice models of care

4.

Trauma-informed care, mental health programs and other services to children who have experienced abuse and other adverse childhood experiences.

5.

Funding for our patient assistance fund which provides short-term and immediate support for families.

“If Dayton Children’s is going to achieve its mission of pursuing optimal health for all children in our reach, we have to look beyond ourselves and the way we have been doing things and reinvent the path to children’s health.”

– Debbie Feldman, CEO

volunteering opportunities

our caring community

Dayton Children’s is fortunate to have the support of dedicated volunteer organizations that raise money and awareness on the hospital’s behalf. Take a moment to learn more about the organizations that commit their time and resources to supporting kids and families at Dayton Children’s.

In a hospital, an “auxiliary” refers to a group of volunteers who actively support the hospital’s operations by fundraising and generally contributing to the overall patient experience, often through community outreach initiatives; essentially, they are a volunteer organization dedicated to aiding the hospital’s mission.

We are always looking for new auxiliary members and would love to hear from you! Please contact us for more information or join today!

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals

dedicated to our local community

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMNH) – the alliance of premier hospitals for children – is a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of children by raising funds for children’s hospitals across North America. Each year, the 170 hospitals within CMN Hospitals provide the finest medical care, lifesaving research, and preventive education to help millions of kids overcome diseases and injuries of every kind.

When a donation is made through a CMN Hospitals sponsored activity, it stays in the community, helping local kids. Since 1983, CMN Hospitals has raised more than $8.5 billion, most of it $1 at a time. These donations have gone to support research and training, purchase equipment, and pay for uncompensated care, all in support of our mission to save and improve the lives of as many children as possible.

We can plant seeds that will blossom after our lifetimes to benefit the children of our region. By making a plan today, we can create a legacy that helps our children achieve a healthier tomorrow.

Our Annae Barney Gorman Legacy Society honors and recognizes those who have made future gift commitments to Dayton Children’s and notified us of their intentions.

Our members have the option to participate in tours and special events, to receive updates on the hospital and the impact of planned gifts, and to be acknowledged on our donor wall, in honor of a loved one, or remain anonymous.

There are several ways to make a future gift to Dayton Children’s. Supporters can choose to designate Dayton Children’s as a beneficiary of an IRA, retirement plan, life insurance, investment account, or bank account. Other options include making a bequest to Dayton Children’s through a will or trust, giving to Dayton Children’s though a Donor Advised Fund, or other methods determined by working with our gift officer.

We are very grateful to the members of our Legacy Society for seeing the need for exceptional care for our kids and creating a way to support our mission for decades to come.
